September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to pause, raise awareness, and remind one another of something that can be easy to forget in the darkest moments: there is hope, and no one has to walk through their pain alone.

Why do we need an entire month dedicated to suicide prevention? Perhaps it is because the need is greater than many of us realize. Behind every statistic is a person, a son or daughter, a mother or father, a friend, a coworker, a neighbor, or someone whose struggles may have been invisible to the people around them.

There are many reasons someone may reach a place of deep emotional pain or hopelessness. Depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, loneliness, relationship struggles, financial stress, illness, and countless other circumstances can leave a person feeling overwhelmed. But beneath many of these experiences is something incredibly powerful: hopelessness, the belief that things will never get better.

And hopelessness has a way of distorting what we see.

When someone is hurting deeply, they may not be able to see the love surrounding them. They may not recognize their own value. They may believe they are a burden or that their circumstances will never change. What they may not realize is that their current situation is not the whole story. A difficult chapter is not the same thing as the end of the story.

Psalm 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” What a beautiful reminder that God does not turn away from our pain. He draws near to us in it.

Recently, a young man tragically lost his life after battling depression on and off for several years. At his candlelight vigil, I learned so much about him through the stories shared by the people who loved him. They talked about his personality, his gifts, his future, and the ways he had touched their lives. Listening to those stories, I found myself wishing I had known him better. It also made me wonder…

How many people around us are struggling in silence, unable to see what others see in them?

How many people feel forgotten when they are actually deeply loved?

How many believe they have nothing left to offer when there are people who would be devastated to lose them?

How many are simply waiting for someone to notice?

Sometimes, prevention begins with something incredibly simple. A smile. A phone call. A text message that says, “I’m thinking about you.” An invitation to coffee. Sitting beside someone without trying to fix everything. Asking, “How are you really doing?” And, most importantly, being willing to listen to the answer.

We may never know the impact of a small act of kindness. We may never know that the encouraging word we almost didn't say was exactly what someone needed to hear that day.

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “the tongue has the power of life and death.” Our words matter. We have an opportunity every day to speak life, to remind people of their value, encourage them when they are discouraged, and remind them that their circumstances do not define their worth.

But this is also an important reminder that a kind word is not always enough, and asking for professional help is not a failure of faith.

God can work through prayer, Scripture, community, and the people He places in our lives, and He can also work through counselors, therapists, physicians, support groups, and other mental health professionals. Reaching out for help can be an incredible act of courage.

And if you know someone who is struggling, don't assume someone else will reach out. Be the person who checks in. Don't be afraid to ask difficult questions. You don't have to have all the answers, you just need to be willing to be present.

As Christians, we also have the hope of knowing that God sees what we cannot see. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has plans for us, plans for hope and a future. That doesn't mean life will never be painful or that faith eliminates depression, grief, or emotional suffering. It means that pain does not have the final word.

There can be another chapter.

There can be healing.

There can be help.

There can be hope.

During Suicide Prevention Month, let's do more than raise awareness. Let's take action. Let's check on the people we love. Let's be intentional about including those who may be struggling with loneliness. Let's replace judgment with compassion and silence with conversation. Let's create communities where asking for help is seen as strength rather than weakness.AdobeStock_509120955

You never know whose life may be changed because you chose to reach out.
And if you are the person who is struggling today, please hear this: You matter. Your life has value. Your story is not defined by your hardest season. You are not a burden, and you do not have to figure everything out today. Reach out. Let someone walk beside you. There is help, there is hope, and there is still more to your story.

Sometimes we simply need someone to remind us of what we cannot see for ourselves.
There is still hope.
