Clothed in the Love of God

Love Always Protects

Why is it that after the clothing of compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience – the bearing with one another and the forgiving of one another – we are told to “put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” in Colossians 3:14?

And how exactly are we supposed to be wrapped in the clothing of love?

What does that clothing look and feel like? Does it keep you warm? Shade you from the rays of the sun? Does it help shield your dignity? Is it giving you a layer of protection from all the outside elements?

No, that would be the clothing of material. However, there are some similarities, right?

What if the clothing we put on were perfect? We would never have to worry about heat, rain, cold, or even lightning bolts. No bullet, blade, or any other weapon formed against us should ever be able to prosper through our perfect clothes. We could go anywhere without fear of the elements surrounding us. Walking in complete confidence that wherever we intend to go, we will arrive safely.

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. 1 John 4:16

What is love? God is love.

Hasn’t the Lord shown His great love for us? Does He not do it day in and day out? Are the moon and the stars still in the heavens? Does the air we breathe still suffice? Are the oceans still in their place?

This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” v. 17-18

Those who know the Lord intimately do not fear that if they were to die today they would be punished. Or that they would not see eternal life in heaven. Knowing the Lord means being confident that His love will protect us from anything we may face.

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7

Faith the size of a mustard seed in this love He has for us will move mountains. Maybe even help us walk right through them. He holds us in His righteous right hand and He is able to do all things.

His great love abounds in all of His creation, even from the Firstborn of all creation. We have no need to fear and can rest that His love shields us from everything that crosses our path.

Colossians 1:15 says that in this God of Love, we were created along with all the heavens and the earth. That we were all created through Him and for Him. That we are all held together from the material to the spiritual in Him, the God of Love.

So be held together in His powerful love. He has not stopped showing His great love for man. Since the beginning, you were planned. You were a move on God’s very heart before there ever was movement in this material creation. Everything was created with a purpose and it is all working out for the good of those who love Him. So trust God’s Word when it says: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

We were created to be clothed in the love of God, not having any fear of this life. But casting out the fears of those who are dying daily. Let us walk in the mutual assurance that HE is still doing all things well, from the beginning to the end.
