The holidays can be exciting and difficult at the same time, particularly for a Christian who is single. Even though there is a lot of happiness and celebration, loneliness or the need for company can also arise. Here are some pointers for making the most of this season rather than just getting by.
Make Your Own Customs. You are free to establish your own traditions for the holidays. This could be anything from assembling a nativity scene at home to baking a special dessert or going to a Christmas market. Regardless of your relationship status, these customs will add a special touch to your holiday celebrations.
Psalm 25:16-17
“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish.”
Discover Happiness in Giving. Giving is about a main tenant of the holiday season. Being a single Christian gives you the chance to give your time and resources to benefit others. Here are a few methods for achieving that:
- Help out at a Soup Kitchen: Volunteers are always needed, particularly during the holidays, at soup kitchens. This not only helps people in need right away, but it also connects you to your community and gives you a sense of purpose.
- Give to a Deserving Cause: Take into account making donations to causes or organizations that share your interests or values. This might be a children's hospital, a local homeless shelter, or a conservation group. Remember that many organizations also welcome donations of goods or even your time, so you're not just limited to financial contributions.
- Offer Your Time to Those in Need: Your time can sometimes be the most valuable gift you can give someone. Perhaps it's an elderly person or a family member in need of assistance with errands or housework, a friend going through a difficult moment who needs a listening ear, or someone who could use some company. Especially during the holidays, giving your time to someone who feels alone or overwhelmed can make all the difference in the world.
Philippians 2:3-4
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Take Care of Yourself. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays, remember to look after yourself. Make sure you're maintaining your exercise regimen, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep. Recognize when you're feeling overwhelmed or alone. Discuss your feelings with a counselor, family member, or trusted friend. And offer prayers for joy, peace, and strength.
Psalm 147:3
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Never forget that God is with you despite your single status. Have faith in God's flawless plan. Never forget that God is with you despite your single status. Your happiness or value is not determined by your single status.
Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Take this time to get closer to God. Here are some practical tips:
- Daily Devotionals: Read a devotional before you go to work. This helps you stay focused on God's Word and establishes the tone for the day.
- Prayer Journaling: Write your thoughts, prayers, and reflections in a prayer journal. It's a wonderful way to communicate your emotions and track God's faithfulness in your life.
- Develop an Attitude of Gratitude: List three things every day for which you are thankful. This causes you to refocus on the blessings you already have rather than anything (or anyone) you may lack.
Psalm 25:14
“The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.”
It's not a survival game having to be single over the holidays. It can be a time of joy, development, and strengthened faith if the appropriate attitude and deeds are adopted. Therefore, enjoy being single, spend time with loved ones, establish new traditions, take care of yourself, find joy in giving, and most importantly, have faith in God's plan!
