2026 AHP Changes: Your Questions Answered

The 2026 Member Ballot includes two changes to how your Annual Household Portion (AHP) works. We want you to understand exactly what's changing, what stays the same, and how it affects your household. Each change is explained below in plain terms, with tables so you can find your numbers quickly.

The Two Changes at a Glance

What Are the Two Changes?

There are two separate changes, and it helps to think about them one at a time.

Change one: your AHP year moves to January 1. Your AHP year is the 12-month period your AHP applies to. Starting with the transition, every member's AHP year will begin on January 1. This does not change your AHP amount.

Change two: you can change your AHP amount once a year. Your AHP amount is the dollar figure you selected, such as $1,000, $1,750, or $3,000. Going forward, changes to that amount will happen once a year.

Your AHP Year

What Happens to My AHP in the Transition Year?

Members join Medi-Share in every month of the year, so most members' AHP years don't end on December 31. To move everyone to a January 1 start, your final anniversary-based AHP year will end early, on December 31, 2027.

Due to this transition you will not pay a full year's AHP for a shortened year. Your shortened year comes with a smaller AHP to match.  For example, if your shortened year is nine months, that's 75% of a year, so your AHP is 75% of your usual amount. Anything else measured over your program year, including your co-share maximum, is reduced by the same 75%.
This is a one-time adjustment. Beginning January 1, 2028, every member will have a full January 1 to December 31 AHP year.

Can You Show Me an Example?

Here's how it works for a household with a $3,000 AHP that renews on April 1:

  • Their AHP works out to $250 a month ($3,000 ÷ 12).

  • Their final anniversary year runs April 1 through December 31, which is nine months instead of 12.

  • Their AHP for those nine months is $2,250 (9 × $250), not $3,000.
  • On January 1, they begin a full 12-month AHP year with their full $3,000 AHP.

A household with the same $3,000 AHP that renews October 1 has a three-month final period, so its AHP for that period is $750.

Does My Monthly Share Change Because of This Adjustment?

No. Your monthly share stays the same.

Do I Lose What I've Already Contributed Toward My AHP?

No. Everything you've already contributed toward your AHP during your current AHP year still counts. You won't lose that balance.

Does This Shortened Year Happen Every Year?

No. It happens only once, during the transition. After that, every AHP year runs January 1 through December 31.

Changing Your AHP Amount

What Is Changing About How I Change My AHP Amount?

Today, you can request a change to your AHP amount at any time of year. Going forward, AHP amount changes will happen once a year and take effect on January 1, the same day every member's AHP year begins.

Certain life events, such as a marriage, a divorce, or an approved financial hardship, will still allow you to change your AHP amount before January 1. You'll find more on those situations below.

When Is the Last Day to Request a Change Under the Current Process?

The last day is February 28, 2027. After that date, the current switch process ends.

If I Request a Change by February 28, 2027, When Does It Take Effect?

AHP amount changes always take effect on the first of a month, never in the middle of one.

  • Moving to a higher AHP amount: effective April 1, 2027
  • Moving to a lower AHP amount: effective June 1, 2027

What If I Miss the February 28, 2027 Deadline?

Your next opportunity is the annual change period. Requests submitted by December 1, 2027 take effect January 1, 2028.

Can I Change My AHP Amount Between March 2027 and January 2028?

Only in a few specific situations:

  • Marriage or divorce: You may change your AHP amount as needed.
  • Financial hardship: You may change your amount if you submit a Sharing Assistance Application and that application is approved.

Otherwise, your AHP amount stays the same until January 1, 2028.

I Already Have an AHP Amount Change in Progress. Will It Still Happen?

Yes. If you've already requested a change and it's been approved, it will take effect on the date you were given. This transition does not cancel, delay, or reverse a change that's already in progress.

Requests submitted on or before February 28, 2027 will be processed as usual, taking effect April 1, 2027 for a move to a higher AHP amount or June 1, 2027 for a move to a lower one.

I Can't Change My AHP Amount Right Now Because of a Previous Change. Does That Carry Into 2028?

No. Any waiting period that currently keeps you from changing your AHP amount will not carry forward. Every member will be able to set their AHP amount for January 1, 2028, no matter when they last changed it.

Does What I have Already Paid Toward My AHP Carry Over When I Change AHP Amounts?

Today, changing your AHP amount resets what you've paid toward it to $0.

If the Medi-Share membership approves the proposed calendar year reset,  requested AHP changes take effect on the same day your AHP year starts over which would be January 1, 2028.

Why Is the AHP Change Process Transitioning to a Calendar Year?

The current process has different waiting periods depending on whether you're moving up or down, which can make it hard to know when a change will actually take effect. Moving to one change each year, on a date every member shares, makes things predictable. You'll know when you can make a change and exactly when it starts.
