This July 4th reflection explores true freedom through Christ, contrasting earthly liberty with spiritual salvation, and encouraging believers to live daily in faith, purpose, and devotion.
This July 4th, our nation proudly celebrates its 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the Declaration serves as the moral foundation for the incredible journey of the United States of America. While not a legal document, it powerfully articulates the colonies' grievances against King George III, setting the stage for a bold, independent government. Central to its message are the profound words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.”
Freedom is perhaps the greatest concept known to man. Over the centuries, many tyrannical governments have sought to enslave people through their dictates and politics. Instead of freedom, most people find enslavement. We see this taking place throughout the world today and within our own country. Evil philosophies of men and women get translated into public policy, thereby representing the opinions of a few, but enslaving whole cities, states, and even the nation itself. Righteousness, right standing with God, is vanishing in the United States and is falling prey to secular ideologies of a few. As Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.” The very concept of freedom, which the Declaration of Independence declared, is vanishing like a vapor before us.
There exists a freedom that is truly unassailable. This freedom is embodied in the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who is our Lord and Savior. Jesus came to liberate us from the oppressive grip of sin and to offer the gift of eternal life to all who choose to place their faith and trust in Him. The Apostle Paul beautifully articulates this truth in his letter to the Galatians. In chapter 5:1, he urges us, “Stand firm, therefore, in the liberty by which Christ has set us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (NKJV).

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to set the captive free. For those of us long bound by sin and unrighteousness, He arrives with liberating power over the dominion of darkness. He delivers us from the grasp of our adversary, satan. Through Him alone, our sins are atoned, and a way of escape is provided.
Jesus Christ Himself validated this ministry. In John 8:36 our Lord states, “He who the Son has set free is free indeed.” The Holy Scriptures abound with similar statements:
- Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
- Romans 8:2 - For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
- Romans 8:15 - For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
As we approach July 4th, let’s honor 250 years of our independence from Great Britain and the remarkable journey of representative democracy. Yet, for those who believe in Jesus Christ and have entrusted their lives to Him, every single day is a celebration of freedom. Each day is a spiritual Independence Day! You have been liberated from the grip of sin and its bondage, and now you are truly free. Free to worship the one true God, free from the condemnation of sin, and free to love, serve, and follow our Lord Jesus Christ wholeheartedly. Embrace this freedom and let it inspire your daily life!
As the Apostle Peter wrote in 1 Peter 2:16, “Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.”
The Challenge Before Us
Now, more than ever, it's crucial for believers in Christ to embrace the freedom He offers and to channel that freedom into glorifying God. As we gather for July 4th celebrations, many across our nation will enjoy fireworks and celebrate our liberty. Yet, it's time for believers to live each day with the same fervor as if it were Independence Day. Rather than fleeting fireworks, our hearts should burst forth in enduring praise to our God. We are called to magnify Him, to boldly proclaim the glory of Jesus Christ. We must exult in God through the proclamation of the Gospel, sharing with everyone that true freedom exists, freedom from sin's grip and freedom found in Jesus Christ. This is the freedom that allows us to worship Him joyfully, standing before the throne of God without condemnation.
July 4th holds special significance, and I am filled with pride to be an American and to live in this remarkable country that has blessed me with a wonderful life. Yet, as a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, my true citizenship lies in another kingdom; I am a citizen of heaven, serving one King: the Lord Jesus Christ. I invite all who read this to join countless other believers in celebrating our freedom in Jesus Christ.
Let our adoration, reverence, commitment, and love for Christ radiate and honor our Lord Jesus Christ in ways that surpass any celebration this world can offer. May “the Lamb who was slain receive the reward for His suffering” through the devotion of all who love the Lord Jesus Christ. Happy Independence Day!
