April brings more than shifting weather. It often carries seasons of stress, uncertainty, and unexpected challenges. But just as storms come and go, Scripture reminds us that we’re not meant to weather stressful circumstances alone.
April is a month of storms, and not just the ones generated by the weather. The month is a perfect example of a season of change, from changing temperatures to the change of “dead” plants into vibrant life, but it can also be a season of change in our everyday lives as well. Tax season and impending graduations are just two examples of these April storms that can often descend on us, and that’s without the heavy clouds of unexpected illnesses, medical expenses, or the loss of loved ones.
Fittingly timed, April is also Stress Awareness Month, and the patterns in the weather can reflect these patterns in our own lives. While April is a beautiful month that signifies warmer weather and sunnier days around the corner, it usually means having to navigate through heavy storms and long rains before the sun can peak through again.
Do you feel stressed? Burned out, maybe? Overwhelmed with life and its chaos? If you’re an adult reading this, there’s at least a 60% chance that you feel the effects of daily stress in your life, according to an American Psychological Association study in 2025. Some statistics even record that number higher, where three out of every four American adults feel the negative effects of stress in their day-to-day lives. That’s a lot of stress, and a lot of lives impacted by it, just in the everyday ebbs and flows of life.
This is a baseline statistic, meaning that if this is the starting point for most Americans, all it takes is just one or two harsher storms to push that stress into an even more damaging state. But for those weathering storms of life, spiraling or isolation is not the only option. In fact, the Bible is filled to the brim with stories of everyday followers of God, now regarded as heroes of the faith, who weathered the storms not in their own power, but by relying on His. This remains our greatest defense in April or any season.
A Biblical Approach
James 1:2 tells us to “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” The use of “when,” not “if,” reminds us that these storms are inevitable. What is within our control is how we navigate them, and even grow through them, in ways that build us up and honor God. James continues: “For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
The book of Job follows a man who had everything: a heart devoted to God, a loving family, material blessings, and a respected status. After a series of devastating events, including a catastrophic storm, took everything from him, Job was left with questions he could not answer and doubts he could not resolve. Though those around him offered misguided counsel, suggesting his suffering must be punishment, Job ultimately endured by trusting the Lord, even when he did not understand why the storms had come.
What Job Tells Us
We may know Job’s story well, but what we may not understand is that Job does not actually “pass” the test. He questions God. He demands answers. While he never abandons his faith, he struggles to fully trust the Lord. Instead, Job leans on his own understanding of God and becomes frustrated when that understanding falls short.
But the most important takeaway is this: even in his questioning, Job learns that God is sovereign over all things, even when we cannot comprehend them. As God says in Job 38:4–5, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!”
We may not fully understand God’s plan on this side of eternity, but Job’s story reminds us that when we face our own storms, we don’t have to understand to be able to hold fast to God. What may seem pointless, hurtful, or irredeemable is still undeniably under the control of the very same God who crafted heaven and earth, who sculpted man from dust, who spoke a word and all of Creation came to be, and who knew you and loved you while you were still being formed in the womb. Perhaps April brings storms, but who is it that established the seasons and guides their winds?
Promises for Life Today
What’s more, when we face our own storms, we have an advantage that Job and those in his time didn’t have; we have Jesus Christ and His Word. Whether you’re facing April’s storms or the storms of other seasons, you can cling to the peace of Jesus Christ and the full, completed Word of God as guidance for any season. As Jesus quieted the storm at sea and brought peace to his disciples in Mark 4, so too can His presence and His Words quiet the storms in our lives!
So when the stress and storms of April begin to break you down, lean on God, His Word, and the community of believers around you, from your church to your Medi-Share family, so that “steadfastness [may] have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
Do not be afraid. April too shall pass, and with it, brighter days and calmer waters. The same God present in seasons of ease is with you in April’s storms, and His plan is still at work, even when you cannot see it.
