How to tell you're growing in your faith? Explore these biblical signs of spiritual maturity and how to keep developing a Christ-centered life.
When I was in my twenties, I thought I knew everything. The older I have become, the less I realize I know. I am completely and utterly dependent on God for everything. With every passing year, I’m more aware of my need to lean in harder on the Lord for the unknowns in my life. Things like: Which direction should I go? How should I answer the question that was posed to me? When asked, how can I help my adult children with their problems? How can I be there for my grandkids? How can I forgive?
Trusting in the Lord helps me navigate the bottomless pit of unknowns that I swirl around in every day of my life. The byproduct of trusting in the Lord is that I am a little more spiritually mature than I used to be.
As we mature, we begin to think differently. “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” (1 Cor. 13:11)
Apart from God and the wisdom that He bestows to me, I am nothing short of having a continual bad idea. Seriously, I do not trust myself. My best ideas are usually quite pitiful compared to what God shows me.
Because I do not always know what to do or how to do it, I depend on Him. He wants me to pray to Him, seek His face and trust in Him. Thankfully, He hears to answer. He loves me so much that He unfolds His plan for my life. The Bible tells me that “God directs my steps.” (Ps. 37:23) So I do not fret.
Life can be hard. Unexpected things happen and you suddenly feel the rug being pulled out from under your feet. As Christians, we can weather the storms of life because we have Christ as our anchor, our mediator, our guide, our deliverer, our teacher, and our Lord. As the storm winds blow our faith-root grows deeper. We continue to grow and mature in Him. Our faith deepens. Our walk looks different. Our life looks different. We begin to look more like Christ.
While pondering spiritual maturity, I asked myself, “What does it mean to live a Christ-like, spiritually minded, and God dependent life?” Equally important, “What does it look like?” Diving deep into this thought, the following seven lifestyle markers came to mind as a good place to start.
Spiritual maturity is not a final destination but a lifelong journey with God. Recognizing the signs of growth is encouraging, and it inspires us to press on, drawing ever closer to Him. Continuing to develop your faith and character is an intentional act, nurtured by daily choices and a heart that seeks the Lord. Here are some practical ways to continue your growth, along with powerful scripture to guide your path.
1. Deepen Your Prayer Life
Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It’s where we build intimacy, seek guidance, and find strength. Move beyond just asking for things and spend time listening, worshiping, and simply being in His presence. Make prayer a constant conversation throughout your day.
2. Immerse Yourself in Scripture
The Bible is God's living word, full of wisdom and truth for our lives. Regular study helps us understand His character, His promises, and His will for us. Whether you read a chapter a day, join a Bible study group, or meditate on a single verse, make time to engage with scripture. As Proverbs says, we should “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
3. Find Strength in Community
We were not meant to walk our faith journey alone. Connecting with fellow believers provides encouragement, accountability, and support. Get involved in a local church, join a small group, or serve alongside others. Sharing life with a faith community sharpens us and reminds us that we are part of a larger family in Christ.
Practicing these spiritually-minded, motivating steps can help us get a little farther along in our journeys toward maturity. Godspeed to you!
